Westfield residents Maxwell Pascal, age 15 and Spencer Pascal, age 16, were expected to start their freshman and sophomore years, respectively, at Westfield High School last September.

After attending the Marine Military Academy four-week summer program, life took an interesting twist.

As students, both Maxwell and Spencer struggled with academics, homework and the like.

So while Maxwell and Spencer were training in summer boot camp, their mother, Sherryl Pascal, Ms. North America Globe, diligently worked on the enrollment process for attending high school at the Marine Military Academy in Texas.

In a few short weeks of school at Marine Military Academy, both boys moved up the military ranks.

By April, Maxwell became Corporal, and Alpha Co. squad leader and named Cadet of the Month. He is active in community service, the band, Jr. ROTC and is highly decorated for his numerous accomplishments. One of the great honors at the Marine Academy, is to receive Cadet of the Month. The cadets who receive this esteemed award are nominated by their drill instructor for their exemplary attitude, conduct, academic performance and involvement at the academy.

After several weeks at the military academy, Spencer also moved up the military ranks, becoming a Lance Corporal. He is in community band and Jr. ROTC and highly decorated for numerous accomplishments. Spencer joined the Airwing program and is now flying Cessna airplanes. He will be a licensed pilot this August with the over 35 hours of air time he has accomplished. In recognition of outstanding mentorship of his fellow cadets in the Marine Military Academy Airwing program, Spencer was awarded for his mentorship.

To say we are proud of our sons is an understatement of the feeling.

In a mother’s opinion, Marine Military Academy is by far the finest education a parent can bless their son with.

Marine Military Academy is dedicated to developing disciplined, morally strong, college-ready young men who are prepared for responsible leadership.

Ninety-seven percent of Marine Military Academy graduates attend leading colleges, universities and military academics.

Marine Military Academy: LEAD Complex Work

Work Completed on Another LEAD Complex Event

Maj Harold Compton

lead complexThis week work on the newest event for the LEAD Complex was finished as the new Tire Swing became operational.  Work began late last week as the old Rope Bridge had all of its equipment taken down and all hardware removed from the poles.  Cabling, hardward and old tires were staged for work to begin on erecting the new event.  Early this week the cabling for the event was fabricated and attached to the poles with appropriate backups and the hanging cables were attached for suspending the tires.  Members of the MMA Rock Climbing Team provided much of the needed manpower to complete this project.  Their reward would be trying out the new event before the Corps of Cadets!  The attached photos will give a good idea of how much fun they had.  The addition of the Tire Swing to the LEAD Complex will provide our upcoming summer program another event to test the campers.

Cadets Toil to Complete LEAD Complex Tire Swing

lead complexCadets initially had to cut all the suspension cables and attach them to the main overhead cable using a series of cable clamps.  Next each tire had to have a hole drilled for attachment of the eyebolt to suspend the tire.  Lastly the tires had to be attached to each cable at the proper height.  The work proceeded quickly as the cadets wasted no time and worked well together to get it all put together properly.  Although it was obvious that some of the cadets were new to the use of some of the tools they quickly mastered the use of them and got the project done in just under an hour!  Once the work was completed and the area cleaned up it was play time!

LEAD Complex Tire Swing a Big Hit!

lead complexCleanup could not be finished fast enough for some of the cadets.  Immediately after storing all the tools they took on the event and found it to be somewhat more difficult than they imagined.  The cabling system is strong enough to suspend one cadet on each time at the same time so they began seeing has quickly the entire group could traverse the event.  Needless to say, the event was not as easy as they imagined and provided a good test for their coordination, strength and skill.  It definitly will be a great addition to the LEAD Complex and something campers and cadets will enjoy!

More Additions to the LEAD Complex Coming

Check back next week to find out about the next addition to the LEAD Complex; the new Cable Traverse.

Marine Military Academy: Boy Scout Troop 22 News

Eagle Scout News

Life Scout Andrew Hodge recently took charge and completed an impressive Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project at La Posada Providencia, in San Benito, Texas. As part of his project, he undertook the challenging task of fundraising to support the project and the facility financially. He was very successful. After covering project material costs, he awarded a generous check in the amount of $530 to Sister Zita Telcamp, program director, for use in day-to-day operations. Accompanying Sister Zita is Ms. Debbie Grayson, President of the La Posada Board of Directors. The ladies were MOST appreciative of the efforts put forth by Cadet Hodge! He has demonstrated keen Scouting leadership by example throughout his entire project. Andrew is fully expected to pass a board of review later this month and earn the lifetime title of Eagle Scout.

Eagle Scout Support to La Posada Providencia

La Posada Providencia is sponsored by the Sisters of Divine Providence. It is a ministry for people in crisis from around the world. They provide a temporary residence and shelter for refugees and immigrants with immigration documents who are in the legal process of entering the United States. The facility accepts documented refugees only. This includes homeless men, women and children with no or minimal income who have fled to the U.S. from countries with oppressive regimes, famine, or natural disasters and are seeking asylum or other permanent residency. The shelter staff provides a safe and welcoming home; mentors to promote self-sufficiency and cultural integration, and imparts American values.  They also provide language and job skills training. Sister Zita Telcamp is the program director.

Marine Military Academy: Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing Competition at UT Pan American

Maj Harold Compton

rock climbingOn Saturday, 28 April 2012 the MMA Rock Climbing Team competed in a rock climbing competition at the University of Texas, Pan American Wellness and Recreation Sports Complex.  The team had been practicing and looking forward to this event since the start of the semester and daily workouts havw focused on endurance, technique and increasing physical fitness in expectation of a difficult competition.  Rock climbing team members were  not disappointed as the competition was long and difficult and tested their abilities.  The team members performed well and by the time the day ended and we headed off for a well deserved meal the cadets were indeed tired but looking forward to their next climbing competition.

MMA Rock Climbing Team

rock climbingThis year the Rock Climbing Team has a total of 14 members of which 12 participated in the competition.  Team members that competed were Cadets Will Timpany, Stevan Banker, Jacob Hudson, Nicholas Hamblin, Rustam Shaykhutdinov, Douglas Hodge, Cody Smith, Charles Lemaster, Jacob Leroux, Warwick, Sandford  and Moore.  This year’s team has only two members that returned from the previous year and surprisingly is made up mostly of underclassmen.  Their daily climbing routinely normally consists of a physical fitness workout that includes plenty of upper body exercises to build strength and lasts approximately 15-20 prior to heading to the climbing wall.  Once at the wall each cadet must do a series of fingertip pull-ups before climbing begins.  These workouts proved to be beneficial in their latest competition as it was apparent that those members that began the semester needing to improve their fitness had done so.  This year the Rock Climbing Team Captains are Cadet Timpany and Cadet Banker.  As Team Captains they are responsible for leading all the exercise sessions as well as putting and taking down and ensuring that all equipment is properly stored each day.

Rock Climbing Competition

rock climbingThis year the Rock Climbing Competition was hosted again by the University of Texas, Pan American and co-sponsored by UTPA and MMA.  A number of prizes were to be awarded and included rock climbing equipment and gift certificates to purchase climbing equipment.  A total of 8 students from UTPA and 12 Cadets from MMA participated.  The event began at 8:00 AM with signup and administrative procedures.  Participants were then given an opportunity to look over the routes they would be climbing.  The UTPA rock climbing wall was set up with a total of 5 major routes that each climber would negotiate.  Each major route had two variations that the climber had to climb for a total of 10 routes.  In addition, a bouldering problem had been set up for those that wished to compete in bouldering.  Each participant would take on one route and then take a break until all had completed their first route and the repeat the process until all had climbed all 10 routes.  Each route had a maximum score of 100 points from which the climber would lose 10 points each time they went off route or lose 25 points if they fell.  The climbs were also timed so that in the event of a tie, the fastest climber would be the winner.  Prizes were to be awarded for each major route and for the best overall climber.  The bouldering problem was to have a 1st and 2nd place prize.

Rock Climbing Competition Results

rock climbingConsidering that the majority of our rock climbing team was high school underclassmen age I was very impressed with their performance.  Cadet Will Timpany placed 1st on two of the routes and placed 2d  overall with a score of 900 out of 1000 points on the climbing routes.  Additionally he placed second in the bouldering competition with one minor mistake at the end of the problem which cost him 10 points and the bouldering win.  Cadet Hudson also placed third overall in the climbing routes..  Cadet Hudson also finished with an overall score of  700 out or a possible 1000 points.  All of the cadets on the Rock Climbing Team were impressive in their performance and should be proud of how well they represented the Academy!

Marine Military Academy: Sharyland JROTC Visits LEAD Complex

Sharyland JROTC Cadets Visit MMA LEAD Complex

lead complexOn Friday, 20 April approximately 90 JROTC Cadets from Sharyland HS JROTC Unit arrived at the MMA LEAD Complex for a full day of fun and excitement.  This marks the second visit by cadets from Sharyland this year.  Their first visit about 50 cadets tried out the events on the LEAD Complex and this time an additional 40 were on hand for their first visit.  The cadets were scheduled to conduct rappel training and ride the zipline prior to lunch and then return to finish these events as well as take on the Confidence Course and Leadership Reaction Course.

Sharyland Takes on the LEAD Complex Tower

lead complexFollowing a safety brief and demonstration of the rappelling and zipline the cadets took on the events themselves.  All cadets on their first visit were required to undergo ground training for rappelling.  This uses a ground station to simulate going over the edge of the tower and allows them to experience the feel and develop confidence in their own braking ability.  Although the cadets are on the ground and not 30′ up, on the edge of the tower, the skills they learn here are exactly what they will need on the tower and they are much more relaxed and confident once the ascend the tower.   Once on top of the tower the rappelling went smooth and fast with no problems and the cadets had a great time, although some were still a little fearful of the entire experience.  Even with some trepitation they all agreed that it was a great time and they enjoyed themselves.

LEAD Complex Zipline

lead complexThe Zipline is the one event that there is never a  shortage of volunteers to take on the event.  The cadets quickly lined up and got the ride of their life.  Having just installed a new cable the ride was much faster and longer than on the older cable and the yells of delight could be heard all of the LEAD Complex!  Sharyland had the distinction of being the first unit to try out the new zipline.  Unlike rappelling, the Zipline does not take any special skill other than the courage to step of the top of the tower and go for a fast 350′ ride.

Following completion of both the rappelling and zipline the cadets took on the Confidence Course and Leadership Reaction course to complete their visit to the MMA LEAD Complex.  We look forward to their next visit.
